Tag Legend Length Checker
Enter the legend one line per row and set a characters-per-line limit. The Panel Tag Co checker counts every character, including spaces and hyphens, and flags lines that exceed the limit. A count cannot prove physical fit. Letter height, typeface, plate width and hole positions settle that, and only an actual-size proof shows it.
Build your plan
Counts include spaces and punctuation. Character count cannot establish physical fit: font, script, layout, material and engraving area require a proof at actual size.
The decision behind an equipment identification batch
Count each physical tag from the approved equipment schedule. Identifiers that look similar can belong to different assets, so preserve case, punctuation and leading zeros. Separate blank spare stock from fully marked replacement tags, and keep substrate, attachment and technical legend approval with the responsible project contact.
Keep with your brief: Exact identifier, legend, finished dimensions, substrate and hole positions.

Visible characters per line, including spaces and punctuation; longest line compared with your chosen budget
A line marked within budget still needs a production proof. A narrow inscription area, a wide font, a logo beside the text or a different script can change the usable layout. Send the exact text together with the intended product and dimensions so those choices can be considered together.
How does a long valve service line get split?
A commissioning technician is writing legends for Pipe & Valve Identification Tags. Valve V-014 has the service description Chilled Water Supply Isolation, which is 30 characters with spaces. His working limit is 20 per line. The checker flags the line. He will not abbreviate without the engineer's agreement, so he splits it. Chilled Water Supply is exactly 20 characters and Isolation is 9, and both pass. The ID line, V-014, is 5. He runs the remaining service descriptions the same way and finds three more that need two lines. He tells Panel Tag Co to set every tag in that family with a two-line service area, so the tags look alike.
Check these details before using the result
- Inventing abbreviations to fit
- CHW or ISOL may mean something else on site. Use only abbreviations from the project's approved list, or split the line.
- Losing a zero while pasting
- Paste identifiers from a text-formatted column. If circuit 07 shows a count of one character, the zero has already gone.
- Trusting the count near mounting holes
- Holes take space from the engraving area. A line within the limit can still collide with a hole, which only the layout shows.

Equipment Panel Tag Set
Start with the approved panel schedule and match every printed identifier to it. Provide label sizes, attachment and exposure requirements; the set identifies equipment and does not verify the electrical design or circuit information supplied.

Custom Electrical Panel Tags
Provide exact dimensions and the approved text for each tag. Keep voltage, circuit and safety wording tied to the responsible team's records, and distinguish a general identification tag from any regulated warning label.

Machine & Equipment Nameplates
Specify whether the plate supplements an existing manufacturer nameplate or replaces a damaged custom label. Reproduce only verified data, and provide exposure and mounting details before selecting the material or adhesive.

Pipe & Valve Identification Tags
Use the approved identifier and service wording, with attachment chosen for the actual valve or pipe. State heat, moisture and chemical exposure; the custom tag should not substitute for required pipe-marking specifications.

Control Cabinet & PLC Labels
Preserve punctuation and capitalization where they distinguish device names. Provide the final label schedule and available space, and have the responsible technical team verify the mapping before production.

What character limit should be set for a panel tag?
There is no standard figure to give. The limit depends on plate width, letter height and typeface. Pick a working number from a tag you already have that reads well, count its longest line and use that. The proof for your own plate size then confirms or corrects it.
Does the checker treat O and 0 differently?
It counts both as one character and cannot tell you which was intended. That check is yours: compare each identifier with the drawing. If your IDs mix letters and digits, ask in the brief whether the layout can use a typeface with a clearly different zero.
Which buying guide should you read next?
All buying guidesCompares two published facility electrical identification specifications side by side to show that nameplate colors differ by owner, then lists exactly what to send so engraved tags match your own specification. Panel Tag Co engraves to the specification you supply and makes no code-compliance claim.
Protect the exact identifier through spreadsheet import, export, proof and packing while separating engraving text from quantities and refusing to reconstruct lost digits without an authoritative schedule.
Count unique legends, physical copies and installation kits separately. Preserve identifiers as text and attach the approved drawing revision, dimensions and mounting detail to each group. Split the packing schedule by panel or site without changing the source identifiers.
A replacement plate needs a complete mounting pattern as well as its outside dimensions. Preserve the original units, hole references and approved drawing.
